How to Win at Raising the Funds for your Group… …the evolution of going from where you are to where you need to be! Step 1. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: To begin the process you must first acknowledge the need for change; realizing your group is not yielding the results desired from the efforts put forth.
STEP 2. UNDERSTANDING: The big difference you’ll encounter in a “volunteer” organization versus a company is the constant changing of the guard and decision makers. You’ll soon discover that “your problem” keeps being carried forward from one board to the next. This is a problem that you most likely did not cause. Change is the answer.
STEP 3. ACTION PLANNING: Sit down and talk to other members and then draw up a plan of action. You want to find a company that will HELP, and listen to your unique position, problems, pain, and needs. Conclude what the past program(s) and companies have really been costing you, and arrive at a NEW PLAN to change your current direction. What is it costing you to do "nothing" about things and just “stay the course?”
STEP 4. CHANGE FOR THE BETTER: Once you have concluded change is necessary to avoid the past problems and continued state of your fundraising woes, find a company that is your trusted advisor. They should be asking questions that uncover your problems and have a plan of corrective action that makes sense to you and your board. Avoid companies pitching brochures and features and talking about themselves. This is just taking you down the same old path. You wouldn’t let a doctor operate before asking many questions and doing some serious investigating…would you?
STEP 5. PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE You are competing with many other groups for the same dollars and you need to maximize your efforts. You have to promote your sale. Why and what you are raising the funds for? Are there “extra incentives” for individual efforts? You need reminders during the sale that will keep interest and excitement until the very end!
